Abstract:
A watching brief was conducted by John Moore Heritage Services during upgrading works to the existing operations for Thames Water supplies at Gatehampton, Goring. The work was split into two phases. The first phase involved the laying of temporary over land water pipes in order to facilitate a second phase of permanent work involving the replacement of all the existing pipe work and electricity cables. This report is concerned with the second phase of improvements. A number of features were revealed ranging in date from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Saxon periods. These included; two areas of burning within a palaeohannel observed running across the site; a wide possibly Iron Age ditch; a Roman posthole and hearth and possible quarrying pit or a continuation of the wide ditch; a Saxon pit; several undated pits and other more dubious examples. A broad date range of pottery and struck flint were in addition discovered from the topsoil and subsoil across the site as a whole. The area of Bronze Age activity discovered during previous archaeological work close to Borehole 1 was also re-encountered. No evidence of the Bronze Age Barrows expected close to the river were however identified.
