Abstract: |
Six trenches were excavated across the site revealing turf and topsoil above a sandy drainage layer. Below the drainage layer was the old topsoil which overlayed the sub-soil. Below the subsoil in the three eastern trenches was a small ditch cut and the natural clay and upper Chalk. Dating from the ditch was a small fragment of Roman Tegula tile suggesting a Roman date, though residual Prehistoric burnt and struck flint were also found in the fill. Dating from the subsoil consisted of two fragments of tile, one Medieval and one Post-Medieval, as well as residual burnt flint. A subsequent watching brief did not reveal any further archaeology |
