Abstract:
In June 2006 North Pennines Archaeology Ltd undertook an archaeological watching brief on land at Drumburgh House on groundworks relating to a house extension incorporating a garage, and associated services. Drumburgh House lies within the boundary of the Roman fort of Congavata, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and part of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. 7 trenches were excavated revealing significant archaeological features of the Roman period. Trenches 3,4 and 5 revaled the probable line of the Wall Ditch. A ditch in Trench 2 may have belonged to the earlier turf and timber phase of the fort. Trench 7 encountered a signifiant portion of Hadrian's Wall in the form of rubble central core of Lazonby stone, suggesting robbing had occured.
