Abstract:
A programme of archaeological photographic building recording was undertaken at Penheale Barton Barns, on the Penheale Estate, Egloskerry, in North Cornwall. The earliest elements of the complex belonged to a relatively poor quality rectangular first-floor threshing or 'chall' barn with ground floor livestock housing, probably dating to the early 19th century. This building was later expanded by the addition of the two lean-to buildings to the west. An L-shaped range of single-storey barns and a detached open-fronted cart shed with high-status architectural features was then built in the mid 19th century, forming the courtyard, with an exterior farmyard wall. This array and arrangement of farm buildings is typical of the 'great rebuilding' that took place in East Cornwall during the 19th century. The buildings were further extended to the west in the later 19th century, with the construction of the water wheel and associated structures, at a time when agriculture was undergoing a substantial development to mechanisation. The original structure was subdivided on the ground floor by a brick partition and partially rebuilt. Substantive and unsympathetic alterations undertaken in the 20th century to create a milking parlour have robbed the water wheel structures of its period setting, but have facilitated the survival of parts of the wheel mechanism within the 'sealed' pit.
