Abstract: |
Watching brief during trenching and enabling works for extension to Pencarron House revealed only drainage and water supply features of the Victorian period plus an undated wall (possible St Nicholas chapel wall foundation). Pencarron House may occupy the site of the medieval chapel of St Nicolas from whence the local street name derives. A chapel known to have been located in the immediate area was described in 1778 as 'the decayed chapel of St Nicolas'. A number of medieval architectural pieces including columns, capitals and widow tracery were observed to have been re-used and incorporated into features and an arch within the garden of Pencarron House but these architectural fragments are elaborate and may not derive from the chapel but from the grander and nearby site of Bodmin Priory (John Allen pers. comm.). |
