Abstract: |
In order to determine the archaeological risk posed by a proposal to extend the existing church hall in the graveyard of St Andrew's Church, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the Parochial Church Council to undertake a programme of archaeological evaluation. Two trial trenches were opened across the proposed development area, both measuring approximately 2.00m by 5.00m. These revealed thirteen graves and the base of a structure - possibly a grave monument. Variations in the alignment of the graves suggest at least four phases of deposition, none securely dateable. All the graves were identified at a depth of approximately 1m below the existing surface. |
