Abstract: |
A very small piece of work was undertaken at the Merry Maidens Stone Circle in October 2009, when a single stone which had been vandalised was straightened and stabilised. The work was undertaken as part of Historic Environment Cornwall Council's Conserving Cornwall's Past Project. There was no significant archaeological intervention. Only de-turfing of the ground around the stone and the removal of a small amount of topsoil were needed to carry out the work. However, this showed that to conform with the design of the circle, the stone had been set with its more pointed end in the ground and a straight edge uppermost - a factor which may have contributed to its de-stabilisation. |
