Abstract: |
Between 20th and 25th May and the 22nd and 24th July 2002 Oxford Archaeology carried out a series of test pit investigations at the Angel Cinema site, Lewis Lane, Cirencester. The test pits where excavated in an area known to lie at the eastern extent of the forum of Roman Corinium. A layer of rubble thought to be associated with the late-Roman abandonment of the forum was revealed in two of the test pits. Two further test pit revealed the cellar associated with Chester House, which is known to have occupied the site during the 19th century. The remaining test pits contained a disturbed horizon of 'dark earth' which is probably medieval in origin. |
