Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in November 2011 at Lower Mere Park Farm, Mere, Wiltshire. Five trenches were excavated. Post-medieval and modern features and deposits were recorded. These comprised features relating to 18th and 19th-century occupation including metalled surfaces, drains and garden features. A Mesolithic flint core and a broken prehistoric flint blade, both recovered in post-medieval or modern contexts, could indicate a prehistoric presence on the site. No Roman, medieval or early post-medieval artefacts were recovered from the evaluation. The lack of any medieval or early post-medieval artefacts suggests that either there was no precursor to the existing early 18th-century farmhouse on the site, or that any such remains have been extensively disturbed by landscaping associated with the current buildings. |
