Abstract: |
An historic building appraisal was prepared for Magnolia House and Acacia House in advance of proposed conversion to four units. Magnolia House formed part of a larger building dating to c. 1700 that was divided into two in the early 19th century. Acacia house was constructed in 1868. An archaeological trench evaluation was undertaken in their grounds to investigate the footprints of three proposed new houses. To the rear of Acacia House Roman deposits were exposed that could be associated with a 1st-century AD military compound. Elsewhere deep deposits of 17th-century and later demolition and levelling material was encountered. No surviving remains of a known 14th-century friary were exposed. |
