Abstract:
This archaeological desk-based assessment was commissioned as part of the consideration to refurbish and convert outbuildings forming part of the Red Lion public house. The refurbishment is also to be carried out within the present pub building, and conversion is to be undertaken on outbuildings with a view to use as a retail outlet for the sale of local products served in the pub and restaurant. Research indicates that there is a high potential for buried archaeological remains of post-medieval date, a moderate potential for remains of medieval date, and a low potential for earlier remains, to exist within the proposal area. These archaeological remains could include house remains, cellars and pits. All would contain valuable information regarding the development of Brill. The proposal's location on Church Street would have little or no significant impact on the character of the Conservation Area.
