Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in January 2013 at the former Coal Research Establishment, Stoke Orchard, Gloucestershire. An area measuring approximately 0.23ha was excavated. The excavation of the internal north-eastern portion of the moated enclosure corroborated the findings of two previous archaeological investigations of the moat ditch and provided further evidence for the date of its construction. A length of a wide ditch which sub-divides the enclosed area was exposed and the artefactual evidence recovered during investigation of this feature suggests that it dates to the late 13th to early 14th centuries and therefore likely to be contemporary with the moat itself. No evidence of medieval structures was found, and a small number of discrete features indicate peripheral activity during the medieval period. Evidence of insubstantial structures associated with the post-medieval and modern farm which replaced the earlier manor was also identified in the form of post alignments and brick foundations, as well as a large refuse pit and a number of animal burials.
