Abstract:
Following work in 2009, an excavation under the footprint of the proposed sports pavilion building revealed natural London Clay sloping downwards from S to N. This was cut by a previously identified NW-SE running Roman road, evidenced by a shallow, concave linear ditch. This was filled by gravelly sand overlain by sandy gravel which appears to have formed the road surface. Running parallel on the E side of this feature was a V-shaped linear feature interpreted as a roadside ditch. This contained pottery dated AD70-120. No corresponding ditch was evident on the W side due to truncation from levelling to form the playing fields. Turf and topsoil completed the sequence.
