Abstract: |
The Archaeology Unit of Southampton City Council carried out an archaeological watching brief on the groundworks for the phase 2 development at the Nuffield Sports Hall, Cambridge Road, Portsmouth on behalf of their clients Relkin Construction Ltd and the University of Portsmouth. The development site lay within an area identified by the Portsmouth City Council's Sites and Monuments Record as containing archaeological potential. The site was believed to be on or near the site of a section of Portsmouth's defences known as the Amhurst Redoubt. The watching brief revealed part of the stone foundations of the Amhurst Redoubt, part of the 18th century defences of Portsmouth and Portsea. |
