Abstract:
In August 2013 Archaeological Solutions Limited (AS) carried out an archaeological desk-based assessment on land at 4 Clapham Common North Side (NGR TQ 2911 7543). The assessment was commissioned in support of a planning application for development of the site for a new residential dwelling. Palaeolithic flint tools and prehistoric pottery have been found 200m to the east of the site. Neolithic flint tools were found 360m to the north-east. A diversion of the Roman road, Stane Street, preceded the course of Clapham High Street. A Roman altar was found in Clapham Common South Side, and possible Roman ditches were identified 360m to the north-east. Evidence for an early Saxon village including several pits has been identified at Rectory Grove. The medieval manor of Clapham was located in the same area where medieval ditches and residual pottery have been found. Medieval refuse pits and a boundary ditch were also excavated at Old Town, 290m north-east of the site, and North Street follows the line of a medieval road. No. 4 Clapham Common North Side began as a double fronted villa named Church House built shortly after 1776 and the development site formed a coach and side entrance to the house. In the mid 19th century the house was remodelled and the site became the entrance way to No. 4. In 1923 both No.4 and neighbouring George West House were owned by Ross Ensign and the assessment site appears to have formed a single storey walk through connecting the two buildings. The building is now gone and the ground is heavily disturbed to a depth of up to 1m.
