Abstract:
This report presents the results of a desk-based assessment, walkover survey and visual impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. on Hendra Farm, Treamble Rose, Truro, in advance of the construction of a single wind turbine. The field name, as recorded in the tithe apportionment - Barrow Croft - is highly suggestive, but may refer to the adjacent known monuments. In terms of the wider landscape, the proposed turbine is to be located within the Newquay and Perranporth Coast Landscape Character Area, noted as a visually sensitive landscape. However, while the proposed turbine may be locally prominent, its size and location within the landscape are likely to ensure it will not be particularly visually intrusive. Most of the designated heritage assets in the area will not be affected to any great extent; for only one - St Piran's Round - will the impact be more pronounced (negative/moderate). Most of the buildings and monuments are insulated from its effects by a combination of local blocking, topography and (seasonally variable) vegetation. With this in mind, the overall impact of the proposed turbine can be assessed as negative/minor to negative/moderate, based on the small size of the turbine (50kw), its location within a valley, and the nature and character of the heritage assets affected.
