Abstract:
In order to characterise the archaeological potential of the site of a proposed new residential development at Sheriffs Court, Burrough Green, Cambridgeshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developers to undertake an archaeological field evaluation. This work was a predetermination requirement of a planning application for the proposed development. An earthwork survey, carried out in advance of trial trenching, identified no significant earthworks across the site apart from a hollow way, which forms a separately fenced area bounding the site to the north, and an irregularly raised area, which follows the northern and eastern boundaries of the field. Five trial trenches, laid out in a general grid pattern crossing the entire study area, were excavated The trenches revealed a layer of topsoil between 0.15 and 0.20m thick over a subsoil layer between 0.15m and 0.20m thick over the natural horizon of sandy clay. Where Trench 1 crossed the raised area along the northern boundary of the study area, no structural features were identified, but a modern iron pipe and pipe trench were recorded. No significant archaeological features or deposits were revealed during the course of the evaluation. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, the risk that the proposed development might disturb archaeological remains of any significance may be considered to be Low for all periods.
