Abstract:
This desk-based assessment considers the site of a proposed extension to Watlington Quarry, which lies between the west Norfolk villages of Watlington and Tottenhill. The proposed new extraction area lies to the south of the Watlington Road and comprises an area of woodland known as Runs Wood and part of an adjacent field. The assessment examines the likely archaeological potential of the proposed extraction area as well as any possible impact on nearby extant heritage assets. At present the only direct evidence for archaeological remains within the site is a series of fragmentary, linear cropmark features, visible on aerial photographs of the field to the west of Runs Wood. The site does though lie within an area of considerable archaeological potential, close to where recent excavations have revealed extensive and significant remains of Iron Age and Roman date. It is highly likely that further remains of a similar date are present within the proposed extraction area, although these are unlikely to be as extensive or complex as those revealed to the south. Evidence recovered from the wider study area suggests that the site also has the potential to contain sub-surface features of pre-Iron Age and Early Saxon date, although these are unlikely to be numerous. Significant remains of a later date are not anticipated as the site was most likely undeveloped agricultural land until the post-medieval period.
