Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of land to the south of the Cottage Hospital, Isel Road, Cockermouth. A number of documentary and cartographic sources were utilised, showing that the site lay in the vicinity of an early 12th century motte, later replaced by Cockermouth Castle, to the west, of which the development site formed a part of the deer park. It was leased out from c. 1700 as agricultural land, in 1839/40 known as 'deer park' and used for pastoral purposes. There is no evidence that it was ever built on. The proximity of the early motte gives potential for as yet unknown early settlement activity in the location, for Cockermouth, and the parkland history is of further interest.
