Abstract:
Archaeological watching brief during excavation of footings trenches for two new dwellings and a new double garage. Naturally-deposited roddon silts were identified, some containing charcoal and indicating activity in vicinity during their deposition. Evidence for domestic occupation and industrial activity in the immediate vicinity in the late 1st to 2nd centuries was identified. Pottery and animal bone of this date, burnt material and iron smithing slag, all of this date were retrieved. These results reflect the previously known archaeology of the area where dense Roman settlement and industry is known. Further undated features and deposits might be contemporary. 16th to 18th century and later features and deposits were recorded across the site.
