Abstract: |
June and July 2003. Oxford Archaeology carried out a trenched evaluation on the proposed golf course site at Luton Hoo. Eighty two trenches were distributed across the areas to be impacted by the proposed golf course targeting areas identified by the earlier fieldwalking and geophysics. Three aspects of archaeological interest were observed. A small group of truncated and undated linear features and pits was exposed towards the western part of the study area. Remnants of brickearth, a 'primary' deposit potentially yielding Palaeolithic material, were encountered in the central and northern parts of the site. Large quarry pits were dug across the area, probably before the mid 18th century, in order to extract brickearth and clay |
