Abstract: |
A geophysical (magnetometer) survey was carried out on a small site on the south-western periphery of North Walsham, to inform the planning process for a proposed residential and associated development. The magnetic background is very variable across the site, partly as a consequence of the presence of superficial deposits of sand and gravel and also to the numerous closely spaced linear trend anomalies which result from the use of the site for the cultivation of potatoes. Against this background several other linear anomalies are identified. The cause of all these anomalies is uncertain; two are interpreted as possible (unrecorded) 19th century boundaries and two others may have an archaeological origin. The interpretation of all these anomalies is tentative and an archaeological or agricultural origin for any/all of these anomalies is considered plausible. Overall, on the basis of the survey the archaeological potential of the site is considered to be low to moderate. |
