Abstract: |
A controlled archaeological excavation took place within the 19th century hospital cemetery, within the area formerly known as Bedstead Square. The cemetery adjoined the dissecting room of the hospital medical school, and contained a significant number of burials comprising the partial remains of a several individuals, which appeared to be derived from anatomical teaching at the hospital. The osteological remains from the site are of great significance in understanding the development of medical teaching. Further burials were also recorded during the subsequent watching brief, within an area which was designated as the hospital burial ground from 1830-1854. Other finds associated with the hospital included branded ceramics and medical instruments. Earlier features included a late 11th - early 12th century ditch, probably a field boundary. |
