Abstract: |
Between January 2013 and June 2013 Archaeological Research Services Ltd was commissioned by Kier Construction Living Ltd to undertake an archaeological watching brief and strip, map and sample in intermittent stages at Greengate Lane, South Killingholme, North Lincolnshire. The monitoring was carried out during ground works relating to the construction of residential properties situated off Greengate Lane, South Killingholme. The works consisted of a watching brief and a strip, map and sample over targeted areas of the site. The works undertaken as part of the watching brief identified two small linear features dated to the medieval period. Phase 3 of the strip, map and sample identified a series of intercutting linear gullies and ditches. It is likely that they have been truncated by the cultivation activity visible in the subsoil layer and were originally deeper than observed. The subsoil throughout the entire area of phase 3 contained frequent medieval pottery dating to the 13th century, and a small amount of pottery was also retrieved from the fills of some of the features, dating them from the late 12th to the mid-15th century. Phase 4 of the strip, map and sample located the large E/W aligned ditch identified in the 2012 evaluation and retrieved finds, mostly in the form of pottery, and environmental samples for the purpose of dating. The pottery recovered from the basal date dates to the 13th century, whilst the secondary fill produced pottery from the 15th - 16th centuries and the upper fills contained pottery from the 18th - 20th centuries. The environmental samples yielded very little palaeoenvironmental evidence, although the molluscan remains recovered from the samples indicate that the basal fill of ditch [3001] contained water and was open until at least the 13th century, with the upper fills being drier, suggesting that perhaps the ditch was used as some form of drainage or irrigation feature. |
