Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological works was undertaken in response to a brief produced by the Historic Environment Management team (HEM) of Essex County Council for an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching on the site of a new dwelling on land to the rear of 161 - 163 High Street, Ongar. (Planning Ref: EPF/1046/08). A single trial trench, measuring 10m x 1.60m, was excavated to a maximum depth of 1.10m on to orangey clay/gravel natural. No archaeological features were present other than the remains of an early 20th century brick toilet block and large quantities of Victorian domestic/demolition waste. Although the development plot lies in an area of considerable archaeological significance within the boundaries of the medieval town, it is possible that any archaeological remains which may have been present have been truncated by 19th/20th century landscaping/development. Alternatively, given the relatively small size of the investigation, earlier remains survive elsewhere on site. |
