Abstract: |
An archaeological trench evaluation was carried out in on the site of proposed new nursery school, situated within Cathedral Close. The evaluation comprised the hand excavation of four trenches, which were positioned both to target an area close to a previously identified former gatehouse and to provide sample coverage of other areas within the proposed development. Garden features, demolition deposits, cobbled surfaces, a wall foundation and a stone drain were recorded during the evaluation. The wall and adjacent cobbled surface may be associated with a medieval gatehouse, or an adjacent courtyard range. The majority of the overlying deposits are associated with an 18th-century phase of works to the property. |
