Abstract:
The project was undertaken as part of a programme of clearance of Phytopthera infected Rhododendron from a c.61ha area located to the north of Trengwainton House within the Bolitho Estate in West Penwith. The programme of works included an archaeological desk-based assessment (Lawson-Jones 2010), followed by a four year long intermittent watching brief with recording during manual cutting and burning, mechanical leaf litter clearance (2011 and 2014 Lawson-Jones). The reports record the physical evidence for the remains of a landscape with a long and varied history. The sites typify the characteristics of Anciently Enclosed Land, Upland Rough Ground and peripheral Ornamental Land, and include hut circles, orthostatic boundaries, early clearance cairns, prehistoric, medieval and later overlying field systems, and post medieval stone extraction pits etc.
