A well preserved sequence of premises of shoemakers and their associated refuse was found off Saddler Street, the occupation dating from later 10th century to 13th. A destructive fire in later 11th century was contemporary with the collapse of the local late Saxon pottery trade. Development of tenement boundaries is traced. Much use is made of graphic and tabular presentation to allow rapid assimilation of the reported material and identification of its associated archival materials.

SX 745789 etc. Houndtor, Hutholes and Dinna Clerks are three deserted settlements on the Dartmoor granite uplands. Dinna Clerks was an isolated homestead, the other two were small villages. Excavation revealed a long sequence of superimposed houses, of turf to begin with, gradually replaced in stone. Recording of their associated barns, corn-driers, gardens, and some fields allows insight into the ecology of this mixed farming economy at 1100-1300ft above sea level. Cause of desertion was climatic deterioration in late 13th/early 14th centuries. Au(abr)

A structure provisionally identified as the church mentioned by Bede as built by Paulinus in AD 628/9 has been excavated to reveal a four-phase development. A disturbed cist grave below the likely altar position contained a bronze hanging bowl with enamel and millefiori escutcheons.

During alterations to this house the aisled hall of 13th century was recognized as an insertion into an earlier 13th century hall with a two-bay wall arcade on its E gable. A reconstruction of the two 13th century phases is presented; high social standing is indicated by the size of the hall as compared with contemporary houses in Stamford.
