Dating evidence recovered from new excavation in and around the original findspot, the context, date and provenance of the baluster column with an inscription in Ogham, which was recovered in 1893 during the excavation of the Roman town at Silchester, Hampshire, are reconsidered. A fourth- or fifth-century date is proposed and the find provides a new early Celtic name, important support for certain stylistic developments in early Ogham, new information on the role of the Irish in Late Roman Britain as well as evidence for life and death in Late Roman Britain.

The surge in metal-detecting over the last twenty years has led to an unprecedented explosion of new material for the Middle Saxon period. A first assessment of these finds in Lincolnshire leads to both the closer understanding of Mid Saxon economics and trade and also enables a wide range of previously unknown sites to be identified. Set into the context of the natural landscape, settlement and wealth, this study identifies common characteristics and functions of these sites and explores their economic role in Mid Saxon Lincolnshire. Incorporating evidence from the Continental written sources, theories are developed as to the nature and development of these sites, which it is argued will probably have to be sought in the nature and structure of the early Church.

It has been argued that the crosiers of saints Dympna and Mel fill a gap in Irish ecclesiastical metalwork between the ninth and tenth centuries. This article re-examines this proposition, considers the dating evidence for the pre-Norman crosiers, and draws on comparative material from recent excavations in Dublin.

Questions related to The Pentice (a medieval colonnaded walkway), such as date and origins, are explored in this interdisciplinary study. Dendrochronological evidence allows a re-evaluation of documentary evidence and of dates at present ascribed to standing remains on typological grounds. The study presents fresh evidence for the structure of The Pentice in the fourteenth century and examines the case for its development in the late fifteenth or sixteenth century.
