Finds from a Roman well in Staines
John Chapman
Susan Smith
3 - 6
Over 1400 bones representing at least sixteen dogs were recovered, together with broken pottery, from a timber-lined well. The pottery is of late 2nd/early 3rd century date and the whole deposit appears to be a ritual of closure.
Replicas and wrecks from the Thames area
Damian M Goodburn
Mark Redknap
7 - 10
Describes the construction by Marine Archaeological Surveys of a replica of the Clapton (Hackney) logboat. A suitable oak (retrieved from the October 1987 storm) was worked with tools of Late Saxon type, recording each stage. The (unskilled) team took about 300 hours. The boat holds four adults in still water; handling trials are planned and other work of MAS, eg on locating wrecks, is outlined. (For excavation report see 89/1557.)
Medieval and later floor tiles in Lambeth Palace Chapel
Susan Degnan
Derek Seeley
11 - 18
The chapel was examined during refurbishment and restoration to its 17th century form. Several panels of med tiling were found, one from the floor recorded in second quarter of 13th century, earlier than the date usually assigned to 'Westminster' type tiles, of which twenty different designs are illustrated.
