A prehistoric site at 542-6 Purley Way, Croydon
Geoff Potter
307 - 312
Work in 1993 revealed substantial evidence of prehistoric activity, principally in the form of flint scatters; there was a potential date range from Later Mesolithic to EIA, with particular evidence for the BA. Occasional Roman and medieval potsherds were found, apparently as the result of localised intrusion within an earlier soil horizon.

Prehistory in the pipeline
Vaughan Birbeck
Ian Barnes
313 - 314
Brief report on desk-top assessment and field evaluation undertaken on the Horndon to Barking gas pipeline development. Auger survey of the Rainham Marshes area confirmed peat deposits were of palaeoenvironmental interest, fieldwalking west of South Ockendon recovered RB and medieval pot and tile, and geophysical survey indicated activity, though no large sites. Isolated discoveries included LBA/EIA ditches, a cremation burial -- possibly of prehistoric date, and a single piece of worked timber from the Greater London section.
The birth of church archaeology in London
Nathalie Cohen
315 - 320
An article drawing attention to two pioneering rescue archaeological projects -- on St Dionis Backchurch and St Michael Bassishaw -- which produced examples of worked stone drawings, crypt recording and photography.
A new type of late medieval spectacle frame from the City of London
Judith Stevenson
321 - 327
Reports the recovery of a pair of riveted bone spectacle frames during the course of metal detecting at Swan Stairs, similar to those found at excavations at Trig Lane in 1974 and seven other examples of this type discovered at various sites in Britain. Their construction, dating, manufacture, use and form are discussed.
Archaeology on the Thames foreshore in London
327
Announces the Thames Foreshore Survey, its aims, methods, and contact addresses for interested parties.
What was the status of Roman London?
Andrew Selkirk
328 - 331
Analysis of Roman London speculating that it was an Imperial domain, owned by the emperors as their private property. There is a call for information on other provincial capitals, for comparison.
