The article presents evidence from a study in which skeletons from seventeenth- to nineteenth-century London of individuals believed to have been afflicted with syphilis, were examined for macroscopic signs of mercury poisoning and for bone levels of mercury. The use of mercury as a treatment for syphilis during this time is discussed in relation to the evidence.
