Abstract
Fauna of an area of Mesolithic occupation in the Kennet Valley considered in relation to contemporary eating habits
Harold H Carter
1 - 3
Comparison of the faunal remains from sites at Wawcott (Berks) with those from Star Carr and Thatcham suggests changes in subsistence emphasis during the Meso. Wild cattle replaced deer and pig as the main source of meat. Fishing and fowling were minor activities on inland sites. C B

SU 896792. Three Neolithic shafts and a couple of pits were excavated; Fengate and Ebbsfleet/Mortlake pottery was found in the fillings together with wares of early Neolithic plain varieties, and flints, some of which could be Mesolithic. The largest shaft, c 3.5m in diameter, was 14C-dated in late 4th millennium bc. Parallels with the Eaton Heath shafts are inexact since here there was no surrounding settlement evidence; but on balance the Cannon Hill shafts seem best interpreted as wells rather than as 'ritual' features. A report on sediment samples is appended.

Excavations at Reading Abbey 1971-73
C F Slade
29 - 70
SU 720736. An area at the east end of the abbey church founded in 1121 was excavated to recover much of the plan, including a formerly unknown apsidal chapel and part of a semi-circular central chapel. Information on building methods was recovered and patches of medieval tiles found, some with patterns previously unknown. Pottery (EBA to 18th century), building materials, small metal finds, glass, worked flints and bones are reported.
A Romanesque capital from Reading Abbey in the Reading Museum and Art Gallery
Ellen Ettlinger
71 - 75
The four sides of the capital appear to depict four phases of the ludus draconis or mock dragon fights performed by boys as part of a popular festival. This festival is recorded in 15th century Germany and bears a relationship to the Norse Hrolf Saga, but the capital is much earlier, c 1130.
