Article describing and illustrating a selection of prehistoric artefacts collected amongst the sandhills on Walney Island during 1947 and 1948. These include flint tools and flakes of the Neolithic to Bronze Age, some portable anvil stones, and small sherds of pottery resembling the transitional Neolithic-Beaker and Domestic Beaker wares found previously at the site. Shells and ox bones derived from middens were also recovered. LD

A survey of the course and present state of the Roman road across the Wrynose and Hardknott passes was undertaken following a request from the Lakeland Preservation Society, instigated by proposals for tree-planting. The central sector of the length examined contained well-preserved and almost continuous remains of the road, as later activity in the area had been pastoral rather than agricultural. From Ambleside to the Pedder Stone and from Butterilket to Ravenglass agriculture had been widespread and intensive and there was little to see of the road. The three sectors are described in detail, before some general observations are made on the construction of the road and its strategic importance. It is concluded that the scale and careful engineering of this remote road through the mountains accord with logical expectation. LD

Paper describing the 13th and 14th century development of the choir at Carlisle Cathedral, and discussing some of the questions that remain unresolved. Almost all documentary evidence for the architectural history of the eastern limb of the cathedral has been lost; the account thus depends largely upon the internal architectural evidence of the building itself. The development is discussed in its historical context, with reference to contemporary work at other English churches and cathedrals. LD
