A dearth of NMR records prompted this 1993 and 1994 survey of the Howgill Fells with Dentdale and part of Barbondale. Aerial photography records from 1992 were also utilised. Sites were few -- possibly a result of present day occupation mirroring that from prehistoric to medieval and post-medieval. The second phase of the endeavour surveyed a variety of settlements, shielings, and enclosures at twelve separate sites. Eighty NMR records have been enhanced as a result of this work and 115 sites have been added to the NMR.

Greywacke or very fine-grained sandstone with finely pecked waist is here interpreted as a BA mining implement. Other similar finds may subsequently be re-interpreted.

Fieldwalking at Brough-under-Stainmore fort brought forth Roman coins, nails, pottery (coarse and samian and post-Roman) and glass.

Red sandstone cist and large capstone described. The reason for the name's association with it is not clear.

Ten objects including a late medieval cloisonné enamelled heart-shaped object, RB trumpet brooch, lead alloy male head, bronze mace head, Henry II short cross pennies, a wool seal and a bronze seal.
