Abstract:
One of the main foci of the design was a triple arched building built over a series of springs at the head of the Shilston Valley. This was interpreted as a grotto and water theatre with two clear phases in its design. The earliest appeared to represent a rare 'water theatre', a terrace revetment wall decorated by various water displays eminating from within and behind it. Also associated with this wall was an artificial tunnel or 'cave' leading to a well served by springs. The second phase of the grotto was represented by a triple arched vaulted structure. This type of frontage was common in the early 18th century. It seemed that the grotto had been extended (on stylistic grounds) in keeping with garden fashion. The grotto building is considered to be an exceptional example of its kind, and is perhaps unique in the United Kingdom in clearly demonstrating two important stages in grotto development.[Au(abr)]
