Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken within the grounds of Fitzwilliam College in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site. The evaluation revealed that a large cut feature, possibly a quarry, had been excavated in the north-east part of the site and this had subsequently been in-filled, perhaps to allow the construction of an extensive garden feature, possibly an ornamental lake. The recovery of clay tobacco pipe from these features suggested that they were post-17th century in date. Elsewhere, extensive landscaping of the site had taken place during the post-medieval period, demonstrated by tips and dumps of soil. Artefactual evidence suggested that this had occurred during the 18th to 19th centuries. A small quantity of medieval pottery was recovered, and this was taken to represent a small, unfocussed residual presence. This may have resulted from either agricultural practice or the importation of soils as part of landscaping. No evidence of either Iron Age or Roman activity was encountered. [Au(abr)]
