Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a retail development in central Birmingham identified eight zones of differing potential archaeological survival. Zone 1 once lay within the grounds of the medieval Priory of St. Thomas, and subsequently represented the eastern access to the 18th century Georgian Square. The raising of the modern road within this zone suggested that archaeological deposits associated with the historic street level could survive. Zone 2 extended along the length of Dale End, one of the earliest roads in medieval Birmingham. Ground level information from 1890 suggesed that no significant changes to street level had occurred. Zone 3 comprised the line of Bull Street, which was also an early medieval road. It was thought that the foundations of earlier structures could survive below the present street level in this zone. Evidence of Regency-style houses could have survived beneath the pedestrianised surface within Zone 4. Quite heavy disturbance had occurred in Zone 5, along Corporation Street, although intact archaeological deposits could have survived, as the street itself may have been raised. Zone 6 lay within the former priory grounds, but had been subject to intense development in the 18th-20th centuries. Zones 7 and 8 lay within the limits of the medieval town, but archaeological deposits were unlikely to have survived because of the construction of underground car-parking and extensive basements, and a railway tunnel within Zone 8. It was noted that the identification of these zones of potential archaeological survival was provisional. [Au(adp)]
