Abstract:
Excavation to the east of Grimstone Reservoir, in advance of an extension to the reservoir. The Site lies between two areas rich in crop marks and earthworks, relating to Bronze Age barrows, an extensive Iron Age or Romano-British field system, and a medieval field system. A very well preserved Iron Age field system is situated to the north of the reservoir, extending along its east side and within 40m of the Site. Geophysical survey (Wessex Archaeology 2008) along the north, west and east sides of the reservoir indicated that the tracks and enclosures to the north may have formed part of a larger system. Evaluation of land to the east of the reservoir (Wessex Archaeology 2008) recorded features dating to the early Iron Age and spanning the Middle and Late Iron Age and the Romano-British period. An evaluation carried out by COAS (2011) to the south-west of the Site recorded features of a similar character, with finds suggesting that it was in active use from at least the 5th century BD until the 1st century BC/AD.
