Abstract:
A programme of archaeological works was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during Hydrogeological Investigations carried out as part of the North York Moors potash development at three locations Tocketts Lythe, Guisborough, Borough of Redcar and Cleveland; Lockwood Beck Farm, Stanghow, Borough of Redcar and Cleveland; and Lady Cross Plantation, Egton, North Yorkshire. At Tocketts Lythe 26 trial pits were excavated and revealed one north-west/south-east orientated ditch just to the west of Waterfall Gill, a surface to the east of the former tramway from Tocketts Lythe plantation to Waterfall Farm, and a dump of clay partially filling a large depression visible in the surface of the field. This depression may be situated over the collapsing galleries of an abandoned 19th-century iron mine. At Lockwood Beck and Lady Cross 54 trial pits were excavated and no features or deposits of archaeological significance were identified. A small number of finds, generally from topsoil contexts, hint at prehistoric activity at Lockwood Beck and Lady Cross.
