Abstract:
This report presents the results of an archaeological magnetometer survey completed for the Friends of Berry Castle as part of an ongoing programme of research and conservation. Three anomaly groups, present on all sides of the monument, were characterised as representing an outer ditch, a stony element of the ramparts on the outer side and an earthen element of the ramparts on the inner side. A previously identified potential entrance on the western side of the monument was assessed most likely to be a true entrance. The magnetic anomaly group representing an earthen element of the ramparts on the inner side at two other potential entrances was continuous which implied that they were not entrances or that the structure of ramparts underwent later changes. A third previously identified potential entrance on the eastern side was discounted. An alternative entrance sited centrally on the eastern side was identified, again with reservations. Potential inner divisions were mapped that mirrored the main ramparts in shape and a potential charcoal production platform was tentatively identified. Two linear anomalies representing potential archaeological deposits were identified to the west of the monument but not characterised further. Anomalies representing possible agricultural terraces were identified to the south of the monument. No conclusions were reached about a previously mapped surface deposit of stones to the southwest. Linear anomaly groups representing stony and earthen deposits were identified to the east that may represent previously recorded earthworks external to the main monument.
