Abstract:
Previous investigations at the site had shown evidence for Roman activity. This evaluation was targeted at areas that the preceding evaluations were forced to neglect due to the presence of standing buildings. Suspected Roman defences at the western part of the site were confirmed, characterized by a turf built structure and a robbed-out wall and associated robber trench. A mortared wall was recorded further west. A substantial building in the form of a series of stone walls, pits and post-holes was recorded, with evidence for a threshold and a collection of pottery. The Bath Road overlaid this part of the site, and although partially truncated by the town defences in general the building had been well preserved by the road. Evidence for medieval and post-medieval tanning was also recorded. [Au(abr)]
