Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site. Archaeological remains of medieval and later date had previously been recorded in the vicinity. During the evaluation, a series of pits and flood deposits likely to have dated from the 14th century were revealed. Animal bones recovered from the pits suggested a function possibly associated with the processing of livestock. Development of the site had occurred on a larger scale during the post-medieval period. Intermittent flooding seemed to have occurred in conjunction with the establishment of several pits, some of which were of apparently 17th century date and contained material associated with the casting of large copper alloy products, possibly cannon. Later activity, dating to the 18th and 19th centuries, had included the construction of a substantial brick building, which had been demolished in the 20th century. Post-medieval activity had disturbed some of the earlier archaeological deposits to a depth of approximately 2m below the present ground surface. Organic materials were found to have been preserved within waterlogged deposits atr a depth of 2.5m. Artefacts recovered included pottery dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries. Medieval products were identified as having originated in Bourne, Toynton-All-Saints and Nottingham. Some of the later post-medieval pottery was likely to have been imported from Germany and Holland.
