Abstract:
An assessment was made of the archaeological and historical importance of hedgerows along the proposed route of a water pipeline, in advance of the proposed removal of parts of eight hedges. It was identified that the line of Ermine Street, an important Roman thoroughfare, lay immediately to the north of Hedge A, and that finds of a Romano-British skeleton and a cremation indicated the possible presence of a cemetery in the vicinity of this hedge. Other Romano-British finds and prehistoric artefacts had been found within 150m of the hedge. The findspot of a Neolithic stone axe within an area of burnt stones lay between Hedges F and G, whilst Hedge H lay to the south of an area of earthworks representing fomrer settlement and ridge and furrow. None of the hedgerows under examination were considered to have formed part of an archaeological site, although Hedge B marked the parish boundary between Waddington and Bracebridge Heath, and all hedges other than H formed integral parts of a field system pre-dating the Inclosure Acts.
