Abstract:
Remains observed during the construction of the flood defences consisted predominantly of alluvial silt deposits and natural clay beneath the modern topsoil. In one area to the west of the Buttercrambe Road, medieval pottery was found in association with a concentration of stones that may be the remains of stone banks. The function of this area was uncertain but it was probably the result of medieval ploughing, with pottery associated with field clearance. Close to the 18th and 19th century mill on the eastern side of the village, the construction of the flood defence wall exposed deposits associated with the infilling of the mill pond. A chamber excavated on the Buttercrambe Road exposed a layer of rough cobbles that was probably a Roman road surface. [Au(abr)]
