Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of foundations as part of a residential development. A previous desktop study had indicated that the site was situated on the fringe of the medieval market town and therefore had a potential for the survival of buried archaeological deposits dating to twelfth century property parcels. The earliest identified activity was the importing of clay to make up ground to construct a timber building which had subsequently burnt down, a layer of burnt late medieval roof tiles being the main source of evidence. Later eighteenth and nineteenth century building episodes were also recorded. [AIP] |
