Abstract:
Allen Archaeology was commissioned by Mr David Page to carry out a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording as a condition of a planning permission for the construction of a new dwelling at Badgers, Bunny Lane, Sherfield English, Wiltshire. The site lies in an area of archaeological interest close to a deserted medieval village of 'Cowsfield Louveras,' the site of chapel and within the grounds of the now demolished Broxmore House. The earliest activities of probable 19th century date are two pits likely associated with chalk extraction. Earlier maps of the region show a history of local quarrying. The excavated area also exposed the foundations and a number of large water cisterns associated with the enclosed farmstead of Broxmore House which once stood here. The cisterns and stables had much disturbed the underlying geology. The stables were used for accommodation during the Second World War which further disturbed the site due to the provision of additional underground services.
