Abstract:
Between 12th and 16th July 2013 Compass Archaeology excavated two archaeological trial trenches in the grounds of Highgate School, one in the gardens of Cholmeley House, (B), and a second across an earthen bank in the southwest corner of the playing field, (A). Trench A was dug due to its position near to the southern boundary of the Bishop of London's Medieval Deer Park, and Trench B was dug in response to prehistoric and Roman finds recovered during foundation works in the 1940s. In the event little of great archaeological significance was observed in either of the trenches. The presence of burnt surface (22) in Trench A was the only notable feature, and this was not of any great age - most likely later 19th century. The trenches did not provide evidence of earlier, (prehistoric or medieval), activity in the nearby vicinity, and the bank was shown to be of largely 20th century origin. The lack of buried soil horizons illustrated that the land surface had been truncated at least once in the past down to the natural ground in both trenches. In the area of Trench A it is likely that this was part of a wider process, in order to artificially level and create a new, firmer, surface to the field. The existing topsoil had been brought in from elsewhere and used at least partially to begin creating the bank along the southern boundary of the site.
