Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at the Chelsea College of Arts and Design during the installations of foundations for 'The Smile', a structure for the London Design Festival. The site was located over the watchtower and adjoining outer walls of Pentagon Five, on the south east of the former Millbank Prison building. The aim was to prevent damage to any archaeological remains uncovered. The watching brief demonstrated that the remains of the prison lay below a thick layer of made ground. Partly truncated masonry belonging to the inner, outer, and supporting walls of one of Pentagon Five's watchtowers were exposed, in addition to one of the prison walls. The entrance to the watchtower was evident from the angle at which the prison wall connected with the watchtower walls. A stone drain was found to run from the inner wall down towards the centre of the watchtower. Outside of the prison building was a layer of made ground, possibly used to raise the ground from its former marshy level. The 19th century made ground and masonry were sealed by modern levelling and topsoil layers. After the archaeological remains had been exposed, they were covered in 30mm of sand for protection before the commencement of the installation of foundations for The Smile.
