Robert Newstead

Selection from unpublished records of archaeological finds in Chester and the wider county over the preceding ten years. A preface includes a general summary of the results of investigations of Roman Chester. The main body of the article comprises reports on: Excavations on the site of the New Telephone Exchange, St John Street, Chester '“ here only a few traces of Roman occupation were found, but two early 17th century refuse pits containing a mass of small finds were discovered; Glasshouse in Delamere Forest, Cheshire '“ a late medieval glass manufacturing site; Bronze Age Burial at Betchton, Cheshire '“ discovered during the creation of a domestic garden; Unrecorded Bronze Age Vessels from the Tumulus, Glead Hill Cob, Houndslow, Cheshire '“ some finds originally recovered in 1878 were rediscovered in an attic and presented to the Grosvenor Museum in Chester in 1929; Hunter Street: Site of the Odeon Theatre '“ many of the deposits at this site had been destroyed by Georgian and Victorian buildings, but some traces of Roman structural remains were identified and some finds recovered; Foregate Street: Swan Court. Site of the Tatler Theatre '“ intact Roman layers were observed at this construction site, and quantities of late 1st and early 2nd century pottery were recovered; Love Street: Site of the Regal Theatre '“ two sections of a Roman ditch, a burnt floor and medieval tan pits were recorded and pottery and other finds recovered; Cooperative Stores: Sites 3 and 4 '“ describes a feature initially interpreted as a Roman ditch, but possibly a medieval tan pit; Forest Street: Site 5 '“ no Roman structural remains were discovered, but a heavily burnt layer was found and Roman pottery recovered; Coins of Theodosius J. A.D. 379 to 395 (Found at Handbridge, Chester) '“ describes the obverse and reverse of two coins found in 1938. LD
